Glutathione

Every cell in your dog, cat, or horse already makes it. Researchers have spent decades asking what happens when they can't make enough.

What it is

Glutathione is a small molecule built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Because it is a chain of three, scientists call it a tripeptide, which puts it on the peptide family tree even though it behaves nothing like the larger, fancier compounds elsewhere in this library. Your pet's body makes it constantly, in virtually every cell, using raw materials from ordinary dietary protein.

Its day job is housekeeping. Cells produce reactive byproducts as they burn fuel, and glutathione is one of the main tools cells use to keep those byproducts in check, a balance researchers call redox balance or oxidative balance. It also helps recycle other antioxidants and plays a role in how the liver processes compounds for excretion. When scientists want a snapshot of how a tissue is coping with stress, glutathione levels are one of the first things they measure.
